Product Description
Pilocarpine is a medication employed for reducing intraocular pressure and managing dry mouth. When administered as an eye drop, it serves to regulate conditions such as angle-closure glaucoma pending surgical intervention, ocular hypertension, primary open-angle glaucoma, and pupil constriction following dilation. However, its long-term use is now discouraged due to associated side effects.
The onset of the eye drops' effects typically occurs within an hour, with a duration of up to a day. When taken orally, pilocarpine addresses dry mouth resulting from Sjögren's syndrome or radiation therapy.
Common side effects of the eye drops encompass eye irritation, increased tear production, headaches, and temporary vision blurriness. Allergic reactions and retinal detachment are also potential side effects. It is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy. Pilocarpine belongs to the miotics family of medications and operates by activating muscarinic cholinergic receptors, prompting the opening of the trabecular meshwork and facilitating the drainage of aqueous humor from the eye.
